21" ( 53cm) glazed porcelain china
shoulder head doll, circa 1855, with so-called " Greiner "- style hairdo
with center part and hair pulled just behind, leaving the ears mostly
exposed, and formed into ten well modeled vertical tight curls resting just
at the top of the shoulder line. In addition she has the rarer brown painted
eyes, with separately molded upper eyelid with black eyeliner and a parallel
red line above. The hair modeling reveals very deep comb marks adding to the
quality of the head. The cheeks have nice rosy patina and the mouth is well
painted. She is on her original muslin stuffed body with sewn joints at the
shoulder , hips, and knees, with white leather forearms with individually
stitched fingers. The clothing consists of a greyish blue linen dress with
very nice pink printed cotton overdress with stars and paisley trim on
sleeves, front center panel, and bottom edge of skirt. She wears antique
black leather childrens' shoes but admittedly slight too large; perhaps they
were hand-me -downs from an older sister with the hopes that this girl would
some day grow into them.
US$ 1,800.

22 ( 55cm ) unmarked parian
shoulderhead doll with blue glass stationary eyes, painted upper and lower
eyelashes and molded upper eyelids, multistroke eyebrows, closed mouth with
" beestung " upper lip, accented nostrils, rouged cheeks, wavy molded yellow
hair, parted in the center with gentle curls in back and off the neck,
pierced-in ears, and mounted on an antique stuffed muslin body with white
leather forearms. She wears antique undergarments and black cloth slippers,
an off the shoulder pleated printed cotton dress with narrow lace waist
band, and antique metal earrings and necklace with a three " jeweled "
pendant. This is a lovely example of the quintessential early 1870's young
lady in exquisite overall condition.

11 1/2" ( 29cm ) papier-mâché
shoulder head doll on narrow waist firm leather body with wooden lower arms
with " spoon " hands and wooden lower legs with painted blue flat slippers,
commonly known as a " milliner's model ". She has blue painted eyes and red
mouth with slight smirk, center part hairstyle with nine very long thick
shoulder length curls which covers the ears. This early 1850's doll is
different in that the face represents an older child or very young teenager
rather than the typical slightly more mature lady. The off the shoulder
dress is a salmon cotton covered by a fine dotted Swiss lace net. The
overall condition is basically good considering age and type with no
repainting but some crazing on the shoulder with some old repair to the legs
just above the paper bands which most likely have been expertly replaced.
US$ 975.

20" ( 51cm ) late 1860's- early 1870's French papier-mâché shoulder head
doll, referred to by the French as a " Pauline ", with dark brown inset "
pupiless " eyes, open smiling mouth with four inset bamboo teeth, painted
black pate with wispy brush strokes on the sides and covered by the original
black human hair curly wig and delicate antique lace mop cap. She is on her
original ( faded ) firm pink leather body with gussets at the elbows, hips
and knees, in overall very good condition with a small patch on the left
elbow region and a minor split in the seam on the lower right arm near the
wrist. All the fingers and toes are individually stitched as well. The
totally original costume consists of an ankle length salmon pink brocade
silk dress, covered on the upper sleeves by wire mesh bands of material, and
the top of the body covered by an elaborate black lace shawl with red bead
trim and salmon silk ribbon bow, with the black lace continuing down to form
an over skirt in front with a black taffeta apron from the waist to just
above the knees. Around her neck she wears a black velvet choker with oval
brass medallion or jewelry. The antique leather shoes are extremely dry and
brittle , but considering the otherwise overall condition and completeness
of the costume, as well as the age of the doll, she must be forgiven this
one imperfection. She shows no repainting or restoration, and only a few
small paint flakes on the black pate which is nonetheless covered but the
wig, and some minor discoloration on the forehead. US$
2,200.

15" ( 38cm ) glazed china shoulder head doll of superior quality of
porcelain, painting, and modeling, attributed to the Nymphenburg porcelain
company. Although these dolls portray images of nobility and position from
the late18th Century, they were actually manufactured in the earliest years
of the 20th Century to commemorate an earlier time. One usually finds these
heads as objects other than complete dolls, so it is rare to find one
complete and assembled as an actual doll such as we find this example. She
has a very nice firmly stuffed muslin body , long delicate porcelain arms
with elegantly detailed blushed fingers and individual fingernails, and most
intriguingly, the most unusual ( if not even bizarre ) molded white china
boots with blue striped patterns with slightly raised heels and painted
brown soles. The lady's head features a long , swan-like neck, brown down
cast painted eyes, distinct dimples in chin and highly blushed cheeks, and
the palest of cream colored wavy hair , off the shoulder and neck, with a
very high forehead, almost in the style of Elizabeth the First of England.
The original dress is also unique and is peach silk brocade covered by a
heavy black lace and pompom-like peach silk rosettes applied over the lace,
as well as having a similar neck line to the dress. There is naturally some
deterioration to the front of the silk in the skirt but overall she is in
lovely original condition and presented in a manner we have not seen
previously to date. US$ 2,500.
